Maybe it drained you, or maybe it gave you a rare chance to stay home\u2014with your family, your dog, or a book. Either way, December demanded your energy: the dinners, the lights, the expectations, the obligations you had to tick off before nearly everything closed for the final days of the month\u2014the \u201cmandatory joy.\u201d \n\nAnd now\u2026 January. Nothing. No big holidays. No marketing frenzy. No staged excitement. Just\u2026 space. Empty, almost unclaimed. No celebrations, no national holidays or \"special days\" breaking the monotony. And maybe that\u2019s why so many people call January the \u201cdifficult\u201d month\u2014the one that feels just a little longer.<\/p>\n
But maybe that\u2019s exactly why we need it. Because it's pause we so rarely give ourselves.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t know about you, but lately I often feel like I\u2019m in constant prep mode. For a holiday, a national day\u2026 take your pick. It\u2019s like I\u2019m running from one event to the next, probably fueled by the endless marketing of social media, keeping me dancing in a rhythm I don\u2019t really enjoy. \n\nFebruary hits with Valentine\u2019s Day (globally), then Carnival (Brazil, Italy, Trinidad), March brings Greece\u2019s March 25th holiday (St. Patrick\u2019s Day in Ireland, Holi in India). I push forward, waiting for Easter in April, May\u2019s national holidays, and then straight into summer\u2014three months of mini-breaks, local festivals, quick getaways, wardrobe changes, routines. And just like that\u2026 it's September: the new school year, an unofficial New Year, back to goals and resolutions. October: Halloween (we didn\u2019t have that in Greece in the past. We do now.) And before the lights even fade, Mariah unfreezes and hits us with her Christmas magic, \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You,\u201d accompanied by Black Friday ads, and before I know it\u2026 December: Christmas. Whew.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m tired just writing about it! And no, it\u2019s not a local phenomenon (aka Greece)\u2014it\u2019s global, just with different holidays and dates. Every corner of the planet has a reason to prepare, decorate, shop, or post.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s as if every month has become preparation, a themed event, a marketing story. There\u2019s no free month anymore. Life has become a constant wheel of anticipation, chasing the carrot of the next big thing\u2014always forward, never still.<\/p>\n
Zoom out. Look at the pattern. The constant prepping. That\u2019s the marketing calendar of modern life: one event after another, leaving us exhausted, distracted, disconnected from the quiet moments in between.<\/p>\n
If a month needs a special event to feel meaningful\u2026 what does that say about our lives the rest of the time? \n\nPause here. Let that sting. Really sit with it.<\/p>\n
And into this rollercoaster comes January. With nothing. No costume. No instructions on how to feel. No narrative. No demands.<\/p>\n
And that\u2019s exactly why it matters. January is unclaimed. Uncrowded. Quiet in a way we\u2019ve almost forgotten how to tolerate. There\u2019s no script telling you who to be or what to celebrate. No countdown. No theme. Just time \u2014 wide, open, slightly uncomfortable time.<\/p>\n
Nature knows this rhythm. Winter slows everything down on purpose. Trees withdraw. The ground rests. Nothing is rushing to bloom before it\u2019s ready. March will come. Growth will come. But first, there is stillness. \n\nAnd so are we \u2014 if we let ourselves be. \n\nJanuary gives us permission to pause. To feel bored without immediately reaching for distraction.
